A taxing mistake
A story in Friday’s edition of the New Haven Register incorrectly reported that Yale University is the city’s top taxpayer. According to the city’s most recent 2011 grand list of taxable property Top 10 Net Taxpayers list, (see chart below) United Illuminating Co. was the top taxpayer. The story also incorrectly characterized Yale’s payroll. The university pays $325 million in annual wages to New Haven residents who work there, representing 30 percent of Yale’s total workforce.
