The New Haven Register was among the news outlets that reported tonight that former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno had died. The Register sent out text alerts and tweeted the news — based on a report from CBS Sports — before a Paterno family spokesman said the reports of his death were false. Because the correction came quickly after the initial reports, Paterno's death was not reported on our web site. Paterno, who has lung cancer, was in serious condition tonight, his family said.

Coaching changes
The reporting of the Yale football coaching search had its share of twists and turns over the past few days.
We first reported UConn defensive coordinator Don Brown was "expected" to be named Yale's next coach. We emphasized sources "stressed" the deal was not done with Brown. However, we stand by our reporting that Brown was offered the position. He withdrew his name.
We then reported on Wednesday that Dave Cecchini of Lehigh would be named. This was the result of miscommunication between a source and our reporter.
A corrected version with the naming of Tony Reno was reported within 46 minutes of the Cecchini story.
We regret the error.

Don't smell any cookies baking in the 1100 block of Whalley Avenue?
That might be because while a story on Insomnia Cookies Wednesday reported: "The ribbon-cutting event at the store at 1143 Whalley Ave., included free samples Tuesday morning..." that's not where the store is.
The new store, which the reporter noted has "heavenly smell of chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, mint chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin and other cookies filling the air" is actually at 1143 Chapel St.
