The New Haven Register was among the news outlets that reported tonight that former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno had died. The Register sent out text alerts and tweeted the news — based on a report from CBS Sports — before a Paterno family spokesman said the reports of his death were false. Because the correction came quickly after the initial reports, Paterno's death was not reported on our web site. Paterno, who has lung cancer, was in serious condition tonight, his family said.
